Question about GSoC 2026

Hello AiiDA team!
My name is Ayush Kumar, and I am targeting GSoC 2026. Last year, I submitted a proposal for a project under this organization, but after the project ideas were released, AiiDA did not participate in GSoC. I wanted to ask whether AiiDA is planning to participate in GSoC 2026 or not.

Thank you for your time and guidance.

Hi @Ayush_Kumar,

Thank you for your interest in AiiDA and for reaching out regarding GSoC. We are currently actively discussing if we will actually participate this year, as we want to be sure we have enough resources and manpower to appropriately supervise a project. In addition, we will have to identify suitable projects that align with the development directions we are planning to take. Hence, as opposed to 2025 (see wiki page here) we did not yet add an entry in our wiki for GSoC 2026. We will provide an update here within about a week.

Best,
Julian

PS: On another note, in the past we were recommending interested GSoC candidates to create a small PR addressing one issue in our codebase.

However, due to the advent of LLMs, minor contributions (achieved with a simple prompt) are no longer sufficient to assess the suitability of potential candidates (moreover, these PRs generate a lot of human work on our side to review them).

Therefore, we do not recommend anymore to open small PRs for potential GSoC candidates. Instead, if there is great interest in any of the projects we propose, we would instead appreciate it if candidates could outline potential design and/or implementation plans, larger-scale refactorings, or invest their time into similar efforts that go beyond good-first-issues. If we decide to participate in GSoC 2026, we will clarify/formalize this on our GSoC pages.

Hi @geiger_j I am also looking to contribute to the project just needed to clarify something. Given that there’s a project https://github.com/aiidateam/aiida-core/wiki/GSoC-2026-Projects#project-natural-language-interface-for-aiida-using-multi-agent-ai from aida I am assuming it’s decided that you guys will be participating this year or can that change depending on the resources?

Hello, I have came up with a project idea which was in github2026 project idea list : “Natural Language Interface for AiiDA using Multi-Agent AI”, and I feel that it align with my skill set project since I have experience with working with tools like LangChain and LangGraph. Additionally, I have developed a mini terminal-based AI agent using local models to understand how agent planning and tool execution are done.

I’m interested in exploring how a multi-agent approach could enhance the intuitiveness of interacting with AiiDA workflows by means of natural language interfaces. I’m curious to know if this direction is according to your expectations, and if so, what areas I could concentrate on.

Thanks!

Hi all, thank you for voicing your interest in GSoC 2026. I just created the official thread for GSoC 2026, so I’ll go ahead and close this question here.

Indeed, we have submitted the linked project proposal to participate under the NumFocus umbrella. We will only know if we’ll have a slot available after the 19th of Feb, at which point we will be able to provide further updates. Until then, we recommend familiarization with AiiDA, its philosophy, architecture, and implementation, as well as the topics outlined on the project page. Best regards!
